What is focused shockwave therapy and why is it a good solution for prostatitis?
Focused shockwave therapy, also known as ESWT (Extracorporeal ShockWave Therapy), works by "shooting" high-frequency sound waves via an application head into the damaged tissue, triggering a number of biological effects. These include the formation of new blood vessels and breaking down calcification in tendons and tissue. At the same time, it stimulates cells to form new collagen fibres, which are found in muscles, tendons, bones and connective tissue.
Focused shockwave therapy also helps regulate and reduce inflammation and reduce pain. All of these factors help to speed up the natural healing process and give you a higher quality of life.
Focused shockwave is effective partly because of the intensity of the shockwave and because I control where the energy from the sound waves goes, i.e. where the injury is. With focused shockwave, my setup allows me to stimulate from the surface of the skin down to a depth of 12 cm, safely and effectively. That is, all the way into the depths of the pelvic floor and into the prostate and bladder.
The treatment may feel like pins and needles or mild pain. We always adjust the treatment according to your pain threshold to get the best possible effect without discomfort for you. Shockwave doesn't have to hurt to be effective!
Frequently asked questions about pelvic pain and prostatitis
Pelvic pain can occur in different ways and can have different symptoms. It can be pain around the anus and pelvic floor, it can be deeper around the prostate. There may be pain when urinating. It can also come as radiation to the testicles and the glans can feel cold.
I offer an effective treatment for chronic pelvic pain with shockwave and EMTT, with no side effects, where we can target the treatment to the affected area.
This will improve your quality of life by reducing pain in the affected area, as well as giving you better control over urination if this is also a problem. The treatment can also help with your sexual function, which 4 out of 5 clients experience in the clinic.
Shockwave and EMTT stimulate nerves, muscles and blood vessels in the pelvic area and promote the body's own healing processes against bacteria and pain. This is done without the unpleasant side effects that can be experienced with certain antibiotics or powerful painkillers.
A standard course consists of 6-8 treatments, but some may need more depending on pain level, duration and response to treatment.
I am the only clinic in Denmark that offers several types of focused shockwave and EMTT treatment for pelvic pain, which has proven more effective than either shockwave and exercise alone, which both studies and our previous clients also confirm.
During the first consultation, I work with you to thoroughly address both physical and psychological aspects of the problem. Here's what you can expect:
- A comprehensive assessment of your pain, physical and mental health.
- A manual examination of the pelvic floor, iliac crest and prostate identifies muscle tension, hairiness and nerve impingement.
- A high-quality ultrasound scan to measure the size of the prostate, check for inflammation and examine the pelvic muscles.
- Determining if the pudendal or inguinal nerve is part of the problem is what will typically be felt in the glans of the penis or testicles.
- We discuss your expectations for treatment and the results we can expect.
- An advanced body composition measurement with the Inbody770 system to reveal your overall health.
- You will receive the first treatment with shockwave and EMTT if you want to start, and instructions for home exercises to ensure a good result.
I will also look at the psychological factors, such as stress or relationship issues, that can affect your health.
The aim is for me to create a tailored treatment strategy that improves your quality of life, quickly and effectively.
The treatment of chronic pelvic pain with focused shockwave and EMTT involves treating the nerves around the lower back, pelvic floor musculature, and prostate with high-frequency sound waves and EMTT. These waves stimulate nerves, muscles and blood vessels in the area, reducing pain and increasing control over the area. The treatment lasts approximately 20-30 minutes and only feels like a light tingling sensation, and the intensity is continuously adapted to you throughout.
There are no risks or known side effects associated with the treatment. You can continue sexual activity as normal throughout the course of treatment.
A standard course consists of 6-8 treatments, but some may need more depending on pain level, duration and response to treatment.
I always perform a thorough ultrasound scan of the pelvic floor during the first treatment. This scan helps us measure the size of the prostate, identify inflammation and examine the pelvic muscles. This ensures that we can target the treatment precisely and adjust the depth of the sound waves. We use the latest and most advanced scanning equipment in the clinic from Sonosite.
How long it takes to become pain-free from pelvic pain varies depending on the cause and severity. Mild pain can often be relieved within a few weeks with treatment in combination with rest and home exercises. More complex cases, especially those with chronic conditions, can take longer to manage. A personalized treatment plan that includes exercises, shockwave, EMTT and physiotherapy can speed up the healing process. It is important to follow the treatment plan and have regular follow-ups to monitor progress. I'll help you with that in the clinic. A normal course of treatment in the clinic takes place over 4-8 weeks.
